2024 will present us a major festival dedicated to the musical legacy of Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov timed to the 180th anniversary of the composer's birth. This festival-tribute, spanning the entire theatre season, will highlight exchange tours between the Bolshoi and Mariinsky Theatres and their joint performance in the city of Tikhvin, Rimsky-Korsakov's birthplace
On 30 December Rossini's magical opera will resonate in the Tchaikovsky Concert Hall. The semi-staged performance will feature principal artists Tsvetana Omelchuk, Kristina Gonza, Yekaterina Latysheva, Alexander Mikhailov, Yaroslav Petryanik, Denis Begansky, and Gevorg Grigoryan. The harpsichord part will be played by Yana Grankvist, with Valery Gergiev conducting the Mariinsky Theatre Symphony Orchestra
On the last day of the departing year, 31 December, the Mariinsky Theatre offers an event-packed programme across all its stages. The Historical Stage will showcase Tchaikovsky’s ballet The Nutcracker (12:00, 18:00), the Concert Hall will feature Klinichev’s children’s opera The Little Prince and a New Year’s concert by the Stradivarius Ensemble, while the New Stage will host two performances of Mozart’s opera Die Zauberflöte (11:00, 18:30) and the closing concert of the XVIII Mariinsky International Piano Festival under the baton of Valery Gergiev
From 23 to 31 December the XVIII Mariinsky International Piano Festival will be held across the three stages of the Mariinsky Theatre. One of the festival's highlights will be the All Prokofiev Piano Concerti cycle. Sergey Davydchenko, winner of the XVII Tchaikovsky International Competition (First Prize), will perform all five concertos of the great Russian composer accompanied by the Mariinsky Orchestra under the baton of Valery Gergiev. One of the performances will be conducted by the young Chinese conductor Haoran Li, laureate of the Rachmaninov International Competition for Pianists, Composers, and Conductors (Third Prize)
The year, rich in significant musical anniversaries, culminates with another important celebration – 22 December marks the 165th birth anniversary of Giacomo Puccini. The Mariinsky Theatre announces a month dedicated to the great Italian composer, releasing a thematic subscription. All of Puccini's mature operas will be performed across the theatre's three stages
