Prologue
Among the stories entwined with the destinies of great rulers and the women they chose, the fate of the beautiful Saray Mulk Khanum – daughter of Qazan Khan of the Chinggisid dynasty – is one of particular fascination. It is a story of passion, betrayal, and nobility, unfolding against the background of the 14th century, an age of political intrigue and struggles for power.
Saray Mulk Khanum was born in 1341 in the heart of the Chagatai Khanate, once part of the vast empire of Genghis Khan. She was destined to become the wife of Amir Timur – Tamerlano – an undefeated commander who was not only a conqueror but also a strategist seeking to unite scattered lands under his rule.
Yet, as so often in great stories, Tamerlano’s heart belonged to another: Asteria, daughter of his enemy Bayezid. On the one hand, marriage to Saray Mulk Khanum promised to strengthen political ties and secure stability in the region. On the other, Tamerlano’s love for Asteria cast a shadow over his intentions.
Saray Mulk Khanum, aware of her role in these political games, tries not to surrender to emotion and preserves her dignity. Asteria, for her part, is far more than a victim of circumstance. She is a strong, independent woman who understands that her beauty and her bond with Tamerlano may become both a blessing and a curse.
When Saray Mulk Khanum learns of Tamerlano’s secret love for Asteria, she faces a choice: to fight for love, or to accept the destiny prepared for her. She decides to step into the shadows…
This story will become not merely a tale of love but a true epic, in which the fates of its heroes, their desires and their ideals are intertwined…
The Battlefield
Human history has seen many events that became turning points for entire peoples and empires. One such event was the battle between the army of the Ottoman Sultan Bayezid I and the forces of the great Turkic conqueror Tamerlano. The battle took place in 1402 near Ankara.
Bayezid I, known for his ambitions and his desire to expand the borders of the Ottoman Empire, faced Tamerlano’s army, renowned for its tactics and the strategic genius of its commander. In that battle Bayezid’s army was crushed. The defeat marked not only a military disaster but also a personal collapse for the Sultan, who until then had been regarded as one of the most powerful rulers of his age.
Tamerlano took Bayezid prisoner. In chains the Sultan lost not only his freedom but with it his hopes for the future. In captivity, surrounded by enemies, Bayezid undergoes a profound inner ordeal. He cannot help thinking of his daughter Asteria, who for him remains a symbol of love and hope, keeping him from the brink of despair.
In one of his most tragic and candid conversations with Tamerlano, Bayezid admits that the only reason he cannot bring himself to commit suicide is his love for Asteria. The Sultan weeps as he recalls the dreams in which she was destined to become part of the great future he had hoped to build for his family and his people: the aria Forte e lieto a morte andrei. While his own fate is already sealed, Asteria’s remains uncertain…
Tamerlano’s Palace
Tamerlano’s palace – a majestic edifice filled with splendour and history – becomes the setting for a decisive moment. In halls adorned with golden ornaments and precious stones, Tamerlano resolves to make a fateful proposal to Asteria, the daughter of his enemy.
He offers her the chance to become his wife and thereby save Bayezid from certain death. If she refuses, however, her father will die as a defeated foe: the aria Dammi pace, o volto amato.
Yet, despite the apparent allure of this offer, Asteria is plunged into deep reflection, fully aware of the responsibility her decision carries for all their destinies. Bayezid, meanwhile, realising the gravity of the situation, decides to reject Tamerlano’s proposal himself. He is furious with his daughter for even considering the possibility of marriage to his enemy: the aria Ciel e terra armi di sdegno. He demands that Asteria convey his answer to Tamerlano: “Asteria’s refusal – and my head!”
His declaration is filled with resolve and pride, making clear that he has no intention of accepting humiliation.
The Wedding Celebration
The wedding chorus and folk songs create an atmosphere of joy and celebration. Yet behind the scenes of this brilliant spectacle, dramatic events are unfolding.
Left alone, Asteria opens her soul, admitting to herself that she is in love with the man who is her father’s enemy. This places her before a painful choice. Her inner conflict finds expression in the aria Deh, lasciatemi, as Asteria wavers between duty and feeling, between family obligation and passion.
Meanwhile, Tamerlano rejects the love of Saray Mulk Khanum, who adores him. He is determined to win Asteria’s heart, even if he must resort to extreme measures. Bayezid reacts violently to Tamerlano’s intentions and vows to stop this marriage at any cost, seeing it as a dishonour to his family.
Asteria, however, has plans of her own: in secret, she is preparing a plot to rid herself of Tamerlano. In a tense scene charged with emotion, Bayezid attempts in a vivid recitative to stop the wedding. At that moment Asteria draws a dagger and declares that it will be her gift to Tamerlano.
In the trio of Tamerlano, Bayezid and Asteria – Voglio strage – the conflict erupts. Overcome by fury, Tamerlano orders them both to be killed. At the same time the Ottoman army prepares for a decisive battle with the Timurids…
The Decisive Battle
On the battlefield, amid the thunder of combat, a fierce clash unfolds with relentless force. Bayezid, brave but unfortunate as a commander, suffers defeat once more. His army sustains heavy losses, striking a severe blow to the morale of his warriors.
During the funeral rites for the courageous soldiers who have given their lives for their homeland, Bayezid and Asteria make a tragic decision: to take the poison they had kept for a moment of absolute necessity. Asteria, filled with bitterness and grief, senses the approach of the end. In her aria Cor di padre she speaks words of farewell, full of love and sorrow, suffusing the scene with deep sadness and tragedy.
Left alone on the battlefield, Asteria sinks into sombre reflections on her fate and impending death. She understands that a life marked by suffering and loss is drawing to a close.
At this moment Tamerlano appears – the mighty, majestic conqueror – and makes one last attempt to win Asteria’s heart. He promises mercy for her father and offers her the possibility of a new life, free from fear and hatred. Yet Asteria, determined to preserve her honour and dignity, refuses him.
In a surge of emotion she flees, and Tamerlano, consumed by passion, pursues her on horseback: the aria A dispetto d’un volto ingrato. This is not so much a physical confrontation as a spiritual one, reflecting the profound inner conflicts experienced by both heroes.
Finale
Asteria has fallen into Tamerlano’s power, and no choice remains to her but to accept her inevitable death. In the aria Se potessi un dì placare she gives voice to all her bitterness, hopelessness and suffering.
Meanwhile, Bayezid, in a fury, realises that his daughter is in danger and vows that even after death he will avenge this humiliation upon Tamerlano. His anger finds expression in the aria Empio, per farti guerra.
In the final battle Bayezid is mortally wounded. Yet he dies with astonishing calm, bidding farewell to Asteria and cursing Tamerlano for his cruelty. Bayezid’s death deeply affects Tamerlano. Realising the full cruelty of his own actions, he decides to free Asteria and renounce his love, understanding that from now on his path will never again cross hers.
Returning to Saray Mulk Khanum, Tamerlano sincerely apologises for his actions and promises her eternal love. Saray Mulk Khanum, now Bibi-Khanym, receives him with an open heart. With this noble woman Tamerlano begins a new chapter in his life – one filled with hopes and achievements, for his realm will be founded on true virtue and justice: thearia Nel mondo e nell’abisso.
This beautiful story is a reminder that even in a world filled with conflict and struggles for power, true feeling can become the foundation for great achievements and change.
