Mariinsky Theatre nominations at the 2013 Golden Mask awards

The Mariinsky Theatre has received several nominations for Russia’s most prestigious theatre award.

Opera and ballet premieres at the Mariinsky Theatre last season have been nominated for Russian’s greatest theatre prize in several categories. The production of The Lefthander by Rodion Shchedrin, specially commissioned for the Mariinsky II and dedicated to Valery Gergiev, has been nominated in the categories “Best Opera Production”, “Best Male Role in Opera” (Mariinsky Opera soloist Andrei Popov as the Lefthander), “Best Work by a Composer in Musical Theatre” (Rodion Shchedrin), “Best Work by a Designer in Musical Theatre” (Alexander Orlov) and “Best Work by a Costume Designer in Musical Theatre” (Irina Cherednikova).

The one-act ballet Concerto DSCH to music by Dmitry Shostakovich (choreography by Alexei Ratmansky) has been nominated as “Best Ballet Production”. Sacre, a new interpretation of Stravinsky’s dance score marking one century since the work’s world premiere, appears in the category “Best Modern Dance Production”, the first ever such nomination in this category for the Mariinsky Theatre as well as “Best Work by a Choreographer” (Sasha Waltz) and “Best Lighting Design” (Thilo Reuther).

The anniversary 20th Golden Mask festival runs in Moscow from 25 January to 17 April 2014. The prize-giving ceremony will take place on 18 April at the Bolshoi Theatre. In January 2014 as part of the traditional programme of the festival Mariinsky Theatre Premieres in Moscow there will be performances of the ballets Sacre and Concerto DSCH as well as Yannis Kokkos’ production of the opera Don Quichotte by Jules Massenet.
