The Buryatia State Academic Tsydynzhapov Opera and Ballet Theatre
A music and drama theatre was founded in Buryatia in 1939, and it 1949 it saw the establishment of a new concert organisation – the Buryatia State Academic Tsydynzhapov Opera and Ballet Theatre. In 1952 the actual theatre building itself was opened. Over the years, the theatre has staged some three hundred works by Buryat authors and Russian and world classics, its repertoire constantly featuring over thirty operas and ballets.
The company has toured to countries in Asia, Africa, Europe and South America including France, Canada, India, Japan, Finland and Algeria. In recent years the theatre has staged several international projects, taken part in a ballet festival at the National Opera of Ukraine in Kiev and toured on numerous occasions to China (Beijing, Shanghai, Shenyang, Haikou, Ganzhou and Dalian). The most significant events of recent years also include a production of the national opera Geser by Anatoly Andreyev, the operas Samson et Dalila, Sadko and Don Pasquale, the ballet-mystery Carmina Burana and the ballets Francesca da Rimini, Anna 'round the Neck, Ruslan and Lyudmila, Macbeth and Yuki set to Japanese Buddhist music and music by American and European composers.
The theatre hosts tours by companies and ensembles from Moscow and St Petersburg and performers from Perm, Samara, Nizhny Novgorod, Krasnoyarsk, Yekaterinburg, Novosibirsk and cities in Mongolia.
