The recipient of grand prix at prestigious ballet competitions in Luxembourg, Budapest and Moscow and the Gold Medal and Vaslav Nijinsky Prize at the Nagoya Competition, Mariinsky Theatre Principal Dancer Denis Matvienko has won fame as one of the world’s great virtuoso dancers. His dance is typified by dazzle and elegance, inspiration in his adagios and his bold temperament in his allegros. His irrepressible passion for the new guides the dancer in his choice of repertoire, which ranges from the classics to works by contemporary choreographers and in his choice of ballet companies with which he works. Having begun his career at the National Opera of Ukraine, where he made his debut while still a student at the Kiev School of Dance, Denis Matvienko first appeared at the Mariinsky Theatre exactly ten years later. Having danced one season as James in La Sylphide, Basilio in Don Quixote, Ali in Le Corsaire and solo roles in Balanchine’s Theme and Variations and Jewels as well as performing the role of the Prince in Alexei Ratmansky’s new production of Cinderella to great acclaim, Denis Matvienko returned to Kiev, but returned to St Petersburg several years later, first to join the Mikhailovsky Theatre and then the Mariinsky Theatre. And that’s not surprising. Denis Matvienko is a welcome guest with ballet companies throughout the world. As a guest soloist he has performed at the New National Theatre of Tokyo, the Bolshoi Theatre of Russia, the Teatro alla Scala in Milan and the Opera de Paris.
An acclaimed master of the classical repertoire, Denis Matvienko is increasingly drawn to contemporary choreography, and will thus be appearing in Edward Clug’s Radio and Juliet with soloists of the Mariinsky Ballet Company at his gala performance.
