It is hard to imagine life in Russia without Russian folk songs, but their very existence has become something of a paradox – universally recognised they have become a synonym for something moribund and of the past. However, these folk songs that blend together simplicity and original ideas, wisdom and beauty and emotionality and inventive musical texts have always united the people. Without them not one event took place in times gone by – church festivals, weddings and funerals, joy and grief. The Russian people who wrote these songs had a special gift for spirituality, and these people wrote not “in their own name”, they wrote without feeling dejection or satiety, and they wrote without seeking admiration for their brilliance or bowing to the spirit of the times. This is what comprised the main artistic force of their creations.
