On 19 December, St Petersburg will see the opening of the Mariinsky Theatre's International Piano Festival. Being held for the fifteenth time, for its anniversary season it will be known as the Mariinsky piano festival. Established in 2011, the festival takes place once or twice each year. In the 2020-21 season it will once again be held twice: in December 2020 and in spring 2021. The winter programme will feature performances by Vadym Kholodenko, Nikita Abrosimova, Dmitry Shishkin and Israeli conductor and pianist Lahav Shani. A series of evenings will be dedicated to the principal anniversary event of the outgoing year – two hundred and fifty years since the birth of Ludwig van Beethoven
