On 27 December a concert at the new stage of the Mariinsky Theatre will pay tribute to Maya Mikhailovna Plisetskaya. The same day, the Shchedrin Hall chamber venue of the Mariinsky-II will see the start of a series of film screenings in memory of the ballerina.
For many years Maya Plisetskaya was a friend of and frequent visitor to the Mariinsky Theatre. In turning to productions of Rodion Shchedrin’s ballet scores – created for Plisetskaya or dedicated to her – the theatre invariably found a wise adviser and aide in Maya Mikhailovna. Together with her husband Rodion Shchedrin she came to Mariinsky Theatre performances and was an honorary guest at numerous premieres, festivals and important theatre events.
On 27 December there will be a performance of works of key importance in Plisetskaya’s artistic career. The concert opens with the legendary Carmen-Suite, composed by Shchedrin on the basis of Bizet’s music especially for a ballet created for Maya Plisetskaya featuring choreography by Alberto Alonso. The lead character Carmen, so dear to Maya Plisetskaya, will be performed by Diana Vishneva. The Mariinsky Orchestra under the baton of Valery Gergiev will also perform the Adagietto from Mahler’s Fifth Symphony, the music of which Roland Petit used to create his ballet La Rose malade for Plisetskaya. The concert will conclude with a 1975 recording of Ravel’s Boléro featuring Plisetskaya with choreography by Maurice Béjart.
On 27 December the Shchedrin Hall chamber venue of the Mariinsky-II will see the start of a series of screenings of art and documentary films, TV programmes and ballet films featuring Maya Plisetskaya. In December and January there will be twelve film screenings for the public.
