Debuts in Fokine’s ballets

On 25 April at the Mariinsky Theatre the lead female role in Schéhérazade will be performed by Viktoria Tereshkina with Vladimir Shklyarov making his debut as the Slave. On 27 April Viktoria Brilyova will make her debut in this role alongside Olga Belik who will be making her debut as one of the Odalisques. 27 April will also see debuts in Chopiniana by Nadezhda Batoeva and Alisa Sodoleva, while Denis Matvienko will be making her debut in the title role in The Firebird.

A subtle stylist, Michel Fokine invited audiences to undertake a journey to far-off times and exotic lands in his short one-act ballets. Together with the World of Art movement’s designers he created colourful worlds in his ballets where dance itself acts as a guide. For each image, the choreographer selected a unique language and sought expressiveness not just in classical ballet but also in character dance, the grotesque and free movement.

Chopiniana is Fokine’s homage to the era of Romanticism with its “white ballet”, soaring arabesques, light dances of the incorporeal sylphs and the eternal longing for an ideal. In this ballet the performers do not demonstrate virtuoso classical dance; here the debutantes will have to display a feeling for the style. On 27 April Nadezhda Batoeva will be dancing the Eleventh Waltz in Chopiniana for the first time together with Alisa Sodoleva in the Prelude.

The Firebird is a triumph of the nature of this colourful Russian fairytale in every respect – there are magical transformations, trials to be endured, a battle with Evil and the traditional victory of goodness and love. On 27 April Anastasia Matvienko will be making her debut in the role of the Firebird. Schéhérazade is a choreographic sketch on the theme of the orient with its sensual pleasures, languid movements of beautiful women and uncontrollable stormy passions. On 25 April the role of Zobeide will be performed by Viktoria Tereshkina at the Mariinsky Theatre for the first time with Vladimir Shklyarov in the role of the Slave. On 27 April Viktoria Brilyova will be making her debut in this role along with Olga Belik as one of the Odalisques.
