Over the course of the week at the Festspielhaus in Baden-Baden the Mariinsky Ballet Company will give seven performances featuring the theatre’s finest soloists, with Diana Vishneva,
Ulyana Lopatkina, Alina Somova, Danila Korsuntsev and Vladimir Shklyarov in the lead roles.
For Baden-Baden audiences, the Mariinsky Ballet Company is a frequent and keenly anticipated guest, and the tour to the Festspielhaus during the Christmas season has already become an established tradition.
In Baden-Baden this year the Mariinsky Ballet Company will be performing two full-evening ballets – Pyotr Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lakewith choreography by Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov and Ludwig Minkus’ Don Quixote with choreography by Alexander Gorsky after motifs from Marius Petipa’s own production.
Swan Lake, with reference to which the German press has commented that the Mariinsky Ballet company demonstrates “elegance of style” and “perfect technique”, will open the tour with Ulyana Lopatkina and Danila Korsuntsev, “the finest duo at the present time”, while the second performance will be danced by Alina Somova and Vladimir Shklyarov.
Rodion Shchedrin’s two-act ballet Anna Karenina with choreography by Alexei Ratmansky will be new to Baden-Baden’s theatre-going public. The ballet, which has been in the repertoire of the Mariinsky Theatre since April 2010, has already been performed on tours to Moscow, New York and London. In Germany, Ratmansky’s ballet will be performed for the first time and with a stellar cast of performers: the roles of Anna and Vronsky will be performed by Ulyana Lopatkina and Yuri Smekalov and Diana Vishneva and Konstantin Zverev.
The Mariinsky Ballet Company’s tour to Baden-Baden will conclude with a gala concert to be rounded off with the magnificent Grand pas from Ludwig Minkus’ ballet Paquita with choreography by Marius Petipa.
