The Mariinsky Theatre takes six Golden Sofits

On 7 November at the grand awards ceremony for the Golden Sofits, St Petersburg’s most prestigious theatre prize, the Mariinsky Theatre won six Sofits.

Last season’s highly acclaimed premiere of Rodion Shchedrin’s opera Dead Souls took three Golden Sofits. Stage Director Vasily Barkhatov, Production Designer Zinovy Margolin and Musical Director and Conductor Valery Gergiev received the award for “Best Opera.” Designer Zinovy Margolin won in the category “Best Stage Designs.” Sergei Aleksashkin, People’s Artist of Russia, received the award in the category “Best Male Role in Opera” for the role of Sobakevich.

Diana Vishneva and Yuri Smekalov won Sofits for their performances of the lead roles in last season’s premiere of Angelin Preljocaj’s ballet Le Parc.

A special prize was awarded to the Mariinsky Theatre for reviving Leonid Yakobson’s legendary ballet Spartacus in St Petersburg.
