The ballet takes place in the 1920s, in post-war Paris. Four strangers happen upon the only free table at the renowned Montparnasse café La Coupole. Each one of them awaits joy, having not at all long ago witnessed terrible events, that occurred in the country.
Mahler's music, lyrical, sudden, reaching the depths of one's soul, places us within the atmosphere of the hero's bilateral condition. They dance, drink, and celebrate, but each one of them is full of the heaviest memories of the war past.
The name of the ballet, La Coupole, French for "The Dome," reveals a hidden metaphor for loneliness: all of the heroes are locked in their own micro-worlds, under the domes of their individual feelings and sufferings. Ilya Zhivoj
