The creative launch of the Tyumen Philharmonic Orchestra (TPO) came in September 2015. From the date of its founding and until October 2020 its Artistic Director and Principal Conductor was Yevgeny Shestakov, Honoured Worker of the Arts of Russia. For the concert season in 2020–2021 the ensemble worked under the conductor Vladimir Dobrovolsky. Since August 2021 the orchestra has been led by Alexei Karabanov, Honoured Artist of Russia and Honoured Worker of the Arts of Russia.
The ensemble comprises sixty-nine musicians. The young performers are all graduates of colleges of music and prize-winners at All-Russian and international competitions. The orchestra’s first performance took place as part of the traditional Denis Matsuev Music Festival in Tyumen, and Matsuev himself became the first soloist to appear together with the Tyumen Philharmonic Orchestra.
The TPO’s concerts have also featured the pianists Dmitry Masleev and Alexander Ghindin, the violinists Vadim Repin and Nikita Boriso-Glebsky, the violist Yuri Bashmet, the cellists Boris Andrianov, Alexander Knyazev and Alexander Ramm.
In 2016 the orchestra took part in the festivals Stars on Baikal in Irkutsk, Crescendo in Pskov and Moscow and the 4th Symphony Forum of Russia in Yekaterinburg. From 2017 to 2019 the ensemble appeared at Vadim Repin’s Trans-Siberian Art Festival, and in June 2019 it made an appearance at the 1st Urals Cultural Forum in Yekaterinburg.
In April 2018 the orchestra undertook its first major tour of Russian towns and cities, presenting concerts in St Petersburg, Moscow, Kazan, Izhevsk, Votkinsk and Perm. In September 2019 the ensemble travelled to the Khanty-Mansi and Yamalo-Nenets autonomous areas, while in March 2020 it performed at the Mariinsky Theatre and the Moscow Concert Hall Zaryadye.
The orchestra regularly presents its own subscription series at the Tyumen Philharmonic: Masterpieces of World Symphony Music, Night-time Concerts with the TPO and The Tyumen Philharmonic Orchestra and Guest Conductors, in addition to a joint subscription series with the Choral Capella of the Tyumen Philharmonic featuring performances of major vocal and symphony works.
The ensemble works systematically with children’s audiences, inviting young guests to attend concerts of the subscription series Tales with the Orchestra featuring leading names in artistic narrative and using the technique of sand animation in addition to attending its Cartoon Symphony programmes.
The orchestra regularly takes part in the festivals Alyabyev Autumn and Summer in the Tobolsk Kremlin and the Denis Matsuev Music Festival.
The ensemble dedicates particular attention to educational work in music; it runs concerts held in the city’s educational establishments and at regional and village Houses of Culture it presents a programme which features popular opuses by Russian and world composers.
