About the Concert

Guests at the Mariinsky Theatre's International Piano Festival will be students of Alexei Bazhenov, a pianist and teacher at the Yaroslavl Sobinov School of Music.
The school marked its 115th anniversary this year; it was founded in the early 20th century, on the initiative of the local division of the Imperial Russian Society of Music, on the basis of music classes, and its first teachers included graduates of the St Petersburg and Moscow conservatoires. In 1933 the school was named in honour of the famed opera singer Leonid Sobinov who was born in Yaroslavl. Today, it remains the only professional institute of music in the region. Its structure also includes a school of music.
Alexei Sergeyevich Bazhenov was a graduate of the Gorki (now Nizhny-Novgorod) Glinka Conservatory (he undertook a postgraduate study at the conservatoire), is an Honoured Culture Worker of Russia and has taught for more than forty years.
His pupils today from the school and the college of music will participate in the concert.
