About the Concert

The Mariinsky Orchestra under the baton of Valery Gergiev will play the music of Jean Sibelius, Maurice Ravel and Sergei Rachmaninoff. Sibelius’s Symphony No. 2, along with his Violin Concerto, is one of the composer’s most popular works, which has gained him recognition in Europe. The concert’s programme also includes Ravel’s famous Boléro, which has been performed as a choreographic and concert piece.

The second act will see the performance of Denis Matsuev in concerto. He will be the soloist for the rarely performed and the most mysterious Rachmaninoff piano concerto, his Piano Concerto No. 4. Denis Matsuev added it to his concert programmes only last year, and now his repertoire includes all of Rachmaninoff’s piano concertos, that is 4 concertos in total and Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini. The pianist performed this grand Rachmaninoff cycle with the Mariinsky Orchestra under the baton of Valery Gergiev in November and December 2017 in Vladivostok and Tokyo, then in Hong Kong, and this spring he has performed it in Moscow, as part of the series of concerts dedicated to 145 years since the birth of the composer. This will be the first Denis Matsuev performance of Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 4 at the Mariinsky Theatre.
