May J. is a pop singer and TV host of Japanese, Russian and Iranian descent. She performs J-pop (Japanese pop) music. The singer’s stage name is based on her real Japanese name May Hashimoto, while the “J” in her name comes from the common Persian girl's name “Jamileh”.
May J. was born in 1988 in Tokyo. She began studying the musical legacy of different peoples around the world at an early age, as well as vocal music and piano. Her debut mini-album All My Girls was released in 2006. It quickly soared to the top of Japanese music charts. In 2008, she became the host of the music program J-Melo, which is the only Japanese show entirely in the English language. Viewers from 180 countries around the globe watch the show (produced by NHK World). In 2011, May J. visited Russia and appeared in two mini-concerts as part of the J-FEST Japanese culture festival in Moscow.
From 2012 to 2014, the singer became a multi-time winner of the Kanjani8 no Shiwake Eito TV karaoke show airing on Asahi. In 2014, May J. recorded the song Let It Go for the Walt Disney Pictures' Japanese release of the Frozen animated movie.
