About the performers

Ilya Papoyan was born in 2001 in St Petersburg. At the age of eight he entered the Rachmaninoff Children's School of Music, and aged nine he became a prize-winner at the International Frédéric Chopin Youth Competition in St Petersburg. In 2011 he entered the Middle Special School of Music of the St Petersburg State Rimsky-Korsakov Conservatoire (class of Olga Kurnavina). Since 2015 he has studied under Alexander Sandler. At the age of thirteen he gave his first recital, appearing at the St Petersburg State Academic Capella.
In 2013 he became a prize-winner at the International J. S. Bach Competition in Narva (2nd prize), in 2015 he was a prize-winner at the Music Anyday international piano music competition in Moscow (1st prize), and in 2016 he was a prize-winner at the International Chopin Young Pianists' Competition in Narva (1st prize). The same year, he was invited by Denis Matsuev to take part in the international Grand Piano Competition for young pianists in Moscow.
Appears at various halls in St Petersburg and regularly performs in concerts at the theatre Born from the Siege. Has worked with the State Academic Svetlanov Symphony Orchestra and the Academic Symphony Orchestra of the St Petersburg Philharmonic, Honoured Ensemble of Russia.
