The Brubeck Brothers Quartet

Evening of Jazz

The Brubeck Brothers Quartet is a dynamic jazz group featuring two members of one of America’s most accomplished musical families, trombonist and bass player Chris Brubeck and drummer Dan Brubeck. They are joined by two “honorary brothers” – the stunning guitarist Mike DeMicco and the splendid pianist Chuck Lamb. While the Brubeck brothers descend from American music royalty, they assume no automatic entitlements. Their concerts and recordings do not imitate or simply repeat their father’s music. They create something new every time, something of their very own. The Boston Globe has written about the Brubeck Brothers Quartet that “they bring a new spirit to straight-ahead jazz.”

Chris Brubeck performed in Moscow and Leningrad during the 1987 tour of the Dave Brubeck Quartet, and again with his father at the Reagan-Gorbachev Summit in 1988. He returns in 2012 as co-leader of the Brubeck Brothers Quartet with his brother Dan. The Brubeck Brothers Quartet performs Chris’ genre-bending compositions, as well as original pieces by other members of the multi-talented quartet. As Chris explains, “If you like Dave Brubeck’s music, you will like our approach to jazz. On the other hand, if you are someone who has never gone to a jazz concert, we would be a good group to introduce you to a beautiful and uniquely American musical experience.”

In 2010 the Brubeck Brothers Quartet and two soloists of the Russian National Orchestra – Maxim Rubtsov (flute) and Vladislav Lavrik (trumpet) – performed Claude Bolling’s Suite for Flute and Jazz Piano Trio and Toot Suite for trumpet and jazz trio. The jazz and classical music dialogue between RNO musicians and Brubeck family musicians provides the backdrop for the 2012 Brubeck Brothers Quartet tour of Russia, reflecting the friendship, innovation and education of a future generation of musicians.

The Brubeck Brothers Quartet’s tour of Russia is being supported by generous financial donations of the Alcoa Foundation, Alcoa Russia, LLC Cargill, ExxonMobil and the Embassy of the United States of America under the auspices of the US-Russia Bilateral Presidential Commission. Additional support is provided by the Trust for Mutual Understanding (New York), the Russian Arts Foundation (California), Swashbuckler Enterprises, Inc. (Washington, DC), MIR Corporation (Seattle/Moscow) and Yamaha Music (Russia).

The Brubeck Brothers Quartet has produced four acclaimed CD recordings – Second Nature (2001), Intuition (2006), Classified (2008) and their latest release LifeTimes (2012), a heartfelt tribute to the ageless compositions of Dave Brubeck featuring the quartet’s fresh interpretations and new arrangements.

Chris Brubeck
A composer, orchestral arranger, lyricist and performer, Chris Brubeck is equally at home playing jazz, rock, classical, funk and folk music, displaying his multiple talents on three instruments – electric bass guitar, bass trombone and piano. An award-winning composer, Chris has been called “… a 21st century Leonard Bernstein” by John von Rhein of the Chicago Tribune and “the new Gershwin” by Keith Lockhart, conductor of the Boston Pops. The Brubeck Brothers Quartet has performed Chris Brubeck’s compositions with such established classical music ensembles as the St Paul Chamber Orchestra, the Philadelphia Orchestra, the London Symphony Orchestra, the Czech National Symphony Orchestra and the Russian National Orchestra. The Brubeck Brothers Quartet is a frequent headliner at jazz festivals and in concert halls across North America and in Europe.

Dan Brubeck
Drummer Dan Brubeck is the rhythmic force of the Brubeck Brothers Quartet. He has toured the international music circuit for more than two decades and led his own group, The Dolphins. In addition to performing with his father’s Dave Brubeck Quartet, Dan has been a featured soloist with many of the world’s top jazz artists, among them Larry Coryell, Gerry Mulligan, Roy Buchanan, Paul Desmond, David Benoit, Jamie Cullum and Christian McBride. Dan’s original drumming style, his distinctive poly-rhythmic solos and use of distinctive time signatures have earned him international recognition. JazzTimes Magazine has written that “Dan will cause your mouth to drop open when you hear him.” Dan Brubeck plays exclusively on Yamaha drum equipment.

Mike DeMicco
Guitarist and composer Mike DeMicco grew up in the arts colony of Woodstock, New York, immersed in blues, jazz and rock music. He has performed and recorded with Chris and Dan Brubeck since the late 1980s, including with Dan’s acclaimed electric jazz quartet, The Dolphins. Mike has worked with many celebrated artists such as Jack DeJohnette, Mose Allison, Dave Brubeck, Warren Bernhardt, Nick Brignola, Michael Franks, Garth Hudson and Rory Block, winner of the W. C. Handy Blues Award. Mike is listed in Lewis Porter’s Encyclopedia of Jazz Musicians (www.jazz.com). All about Jazz writes that “His diverse resume has contributed to his playing prowess... DeMicco possesses a fluid, melodic style and excellent technique and taste.”
The author of Homespun Tapes’ highly acclaimed three-DVD instructional set You Can Play Jazz Guitar! , Mike is also the featured accompanist on The Acoustic Bass taught by Gary Peacock (www.homespuntapes.com).

Chuck Lamb
Chuck Lamb – pianist, composer and percussionist – co-founded the group Dry Jack which was cited in The Rolling Stone History of Music as a leading, cutting-edge jazz fusion group. As a member of the Brubeck Brothers Quartet, Chuck has toured the world and garnered global accolades for his creativity and expertise from publications such as Billboard Magazine, Keyboard, the New York Times and the Los Angeles Times. Chuck has played with many musical greats including the Woody Herman Orchestra, Bela Fleck, Dave Holland, Eddie Jefferson, Ginger Baker, Tom Harrell and Ernestine Anderson. With his musical partner, the vocalist and composer Theano Lamb, he has produced numerous recordings. Eric Ericksson of Kass Recordings has written that “Pianist Chuck Lamb sweeps together a stunningly comprehensive approach to the keyboard; he can play with elegance ... or positively roar with the most leonine gestures. His imagination seems to know no bounds.”

Vladislav Lavrik
Vladislav Lavrik, one of the most talented musicians of his generation, is Russia’s finest trumpeter and a rising young conductor. Recognised for achievements in both classical and jazz performing styles, he was appointed principal trumpeter of the Russian National Orchestra at the age of twenty, the youngest person to hold a principal chair in the history of the ensemble. In 2011 he was elected to the board of the International Trumpet Guild, the first Russian to be given this honour and responsibility. Lavrik is a graduate of the Moscow State Conservatoire, where he is a professor of trumpet and where he established the annual International Brass Days Festival. He studies conducting with Professor Vladimir Fedoseyev at the Gnessins Academy of Music. Lavrik’s recordings include the 2011 solo album Meditation, featuring the music of Russian composers performed by the Russian Army Band. The winner of many awards as a soloist, Lavrik is a Yamaha Artist in Russia.

Maxim Rubtsov
Internationally acclaimed flautist Maxim Rubtsov has been called “one of the best flautists of the modern age, an amazing performer who commands the audience’s attention from the moment he walks on stage.” He is also one of Russia’s best musical ambassadors. A graduate of the Moscow State Conservatoire, Rubtsov is frequently invited to perform and teach in the United States. His solo CD entitled Russian Romance was released in 2011. It was featured in concert at the USA National Flute Association’s annual convention. Rubtsov is leader and a founding member of the Russian National Orchestra Wind Quintet (RNOWQ), which took top honours at the V Annual Osaka International Chamber Music Competition. Together with the RNOWQ he has explored jazz and other genre-bending compositions, including the works of Chris Brubeck for wind quintet and jazz quartet. In 2013 Chris Brubeck’s new composition for two flutes and mixed ensemble will feature Maxim Rubtsov and American flautist Diane Schultz.
