Serenade. Symphony in C

ballets of George Balanchine

Performers

Age category 12+

The Mariinsky Theatre is delighted to present the ballets of the greatest choreographer of the 20th century – ballet legend George Balanchine.
Serenade and Symphony in C, like most of Balanchine´s ballets, have no plot: the dance arises from the music, not a subject, and the pure dance itself creates the drama and the poetry. For Balanchine it was the choreography in itself that was important: music and movement, space and dancers, line and rhythm.
Balanchine was, first and foremost, a professional, a virtuoso, a genius drawing inspiration from a supreme art which he forged to perfection. But neither the cult of virtuoso technique nor an analytical approach to form make Balanchine´s works dry or rational: his ballets are light-filled, brimming with life and passion, the structure of the dance is glittering and light, the rhythms magical.
