The Mariinsky Theatre’s box-offices and website have commenced sales of tickets for the first performances and concerts to take place in December.
Next month, theatregoers will have the opportunity to see operas including Yuri Temirkanov’s production of Eugene Onegin, Carmen, La Bohème and Christmas Eve. At the Mariinsky-II, there will be a series of performances of the elegant Traviata as well as a production from last season — the festive operetta Die Fledermaus.
Young theatre audiences may also look forward to numerous performances and concert programmes. These are to include a performance of The Story of Kai and Gerda marking the eightieth birthday of the composer Sergei Banevich, presentations of Russian, oriental and Italian fairytales and interactive sessions with Olga Piccolo.
The first pre-Christmas and New Year performances of The Nutcracker will be given by students of the Vaganova Academy of Russian Ballet. Not to be missed are the ever-dazzling The Sleeping Beauty, Swan Lake, Romeo and Juliet and Shurale. Events on the opera and concert playbill feature evenings in memory of the violinist and teacher Antonina Kazarina, People’s Artist of the USSR, who served with the Kirov-Mariinsky Orchestra for four decades.
Olga Borodina, Yuri Marusin and Gennany Bezzubenkov are to appear at the Concert Hall with the orchestra under the baton of Christian Knapp. The cantata God Saves All, written by contemporary American conductor and composer Felix Kruglikov to verse by Anna Akhmatova, will be performed by Ekaterina Semenchuk and Anna Kiknadze in the solo roles with maestro Knapp conducting.
In the lead up to New Year, audiences will be launched into a festive mood with Vienna Ball with the Mariinsky Stradivarius Ensemble. Alongside orchestral soloists, Christian Knapp is rehearsing the evening Viola con amore; that programme includes Bach’s Sixth Brandenburg Concerto and Berlioz’ Harold en Italie in addition to rarely performed works by Bridge and Bowen.
