The China Philharmonic Orchestra’s Debut at the Concert Hall of the Mariinsky Theatre

On 31 July (19:00), the Concert Hall of the Mariinsky Theatre will host the debut performance of the China Philharmonic Orchestra. The young ensemble is distinguished by its own unique performance style. In St Petersburg, the musicians will present a programme which skilfully combines European and Asian musical traditions. The orchestra will perform Dmitry Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 5, Felix Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto, Ye Zou’s The Drunken Concubine (after a Peking opera) under the baton of its Artistic Director and Chief Conductor Long Yu. The concert’s participants include Yi Wang, soloist of the Beijing Opera Theatre, and the 12-year-old violinist Paloma So, who is a prize-winner of the Henryk Wieniawski International Violin Competition in Lublin (2015) and the Novosibirsk International Violin Competition (2016).

The China Philharmonic Orchestra was founded in Beijing in May of 2000 on the basis of the former China Broadcasting Symphony Orchestra. Over the years, the orchestra has appeared in concerts in China and abroad. The ensemble also helped premiere scores of works by modern composers (for example, the 2001 premiere of Philip Glass’ Cello Concerto No. 1, which was commissioned by the orchestra itself). Moreover, the China Philharmonic Orchestra regularly performs the music of Chinese composers. In 2002, the musicians went on their first world tour and gave a total of 22 concerts. In the following years, the ensemble has given multiple performances on tour in Europe and the USA. In 2009, the British Gramophone magazine featured the China Philharmonic Orchestra as one of the world's top 10 most inspiring orchestras alongside the Berlin Philharmonic and the London Philharmonic Orchestra.

This concert of the China Philharmonic Orchestra will conclude the 2017/2018 season at the  Concert Hall of the Mariinsky Theatre.
