Valery Gergiev has announced the names of the Principal Conductor and Principal Guest Conductor of the Primorsky Stage of the Mariinsky Theatre

Artistic and General Director of the Mariinsky Theatre Valery Gergiev has announced the name of the Principal Conductor of the Primorsky Stage of the Mariinsky Theatre in Vladivostok; the post has been given to Mariinsky Theatre conductor Pavel Smelkov. The Principal Guest Conductor of the Primorsky Stage is Mariinsky Theatre guest conductor Vladislav Karklin.

Pavel Smelkov is well known to performers and audiences in Vladivostok. There he has previously conducted the opera Eugene Onegin and worked on a restaging of the opera The Queen of Spades directed by Yuri Temirkanov at the Mariinsky Theatre, transferred to the Primorsky Theatre in December 2015. Smelkov graduated from the St Petersburg State Rimsky-Korsakov Conservatoire in opera and symphony music conducting (class of Professors Ilya Musin and Mikhail Kukushkin) and composition (class of Professor Аlexander Mnatsakanian). Has worked at the Mariinsky Theatre since 2000. Has toured on numerous occasions with the company to France, Finland, Austria, Germany, Israel and the USA.

Vladislav Karklin began his music career as a clarinettist. Having graduated from the St Petersburg Conservatoire where, in addition to his main specialisation he attended the class of Ilya Musin as well as a postgraduate course at the Robert Schumann Hochschule in Düsseldorf, he continued his studies, specialising in piano and symphony conducting. As a conductor he has collaborated with musical theatres in Germany and later, as a guest conductor, with the St Petersburg State Academic Symphony Orchestra, the Krasnodar Musical Theatre, the St Petersburg Philharmonic and the Helikon Opera in Moscow. Since 2011 Vladislav Karklin has been a guest conductor at the Mariinsky Theatre.
