Nominees for the 55th American Academy of Recording Arts have been announced: Valery Gergiev has been nominated in one category and the Mariinsky label’s recording of Jules Massenet’s opera Don Quichotte in another. For classical music, the category “Producer of the Year” saw James Mallinson nominated for two discs – LSO Live and Jules Massenet’s Don Quichotte, released on the Mariinsky label. Valery Gergiev and the London Symphony Orchestra which he conducts have been nominated in the category “Best Orchestral Performance” for their recording of Sergei Rachmaninoff’s Symphonic Dances, recorded on the LSO Live label. The winners will be announced at the awards ceremony in Los Angeles on 10 February 2013. This is not the first time that Valery Gergiev and the Mariinsky label’s recordings have been nominated to receive this prestigious award. At the Mariinsky Theatre, late December will see the long-awaited premiere of a stage version of Jules Massenet’s opera Don Quichotte with the same dazzling cast as the recording, including Ferruccio Furlanetto in the title role. |
