In November the Mariinsky Orchestra will be performing ten concerts at cities throughout Japan under the baton of Valery Gergiev.

The concert programmes have been planned largely around the music of the Russian composers Pyotr Tchaikovsky, Sergei Rachmaninoff and Dmitry Shostakovich. The first concert will take place at the Kenritsu Sogo Bunka Center in Oita and will feature Rachmaninoff’s Third Piano Concerto with Denis Matsuev, Shostakovich’s Eleventh Symphony and Lyadov’s Kikimora.

Rachmaninoff’s Third Piano Concerto will also feature at a concert at the Prefectural Theatre in Kumamoto on 9 November where there will additionally be performances of Shchedrin’s Mischievous Folk Ditties and Shostakovich’s Fifth Symphony.

The role of Lucia is one of the singer’s finest. In 2011 together with the Mariinsky Orchestra and maestro Gergiev, Dessay recorded Lucia di Lammermoor on the Mariinsky label. Almost immediately the disc was named “Disc of the Week” by Britain’s The Daily Telegraph.

On 13 November at the Aichi Prefectual Arts Theatre in Nagoya there will be a performance of Lyadov’s Kikimora, Shostakovich’s Fifth Symphony and Sibelius’ Violin Concerto. Leonidas Kavakos will be performing the solo.
