Over two evenings there will be performances of the composer’s First, Eighth, Ninth and Fifteenth Symphonies as well as two of his piano concertos. The soloist will be Alexander Toradze. The National Center for the Performing Arts, China’s largest cultural centre which houses several stage venues, was opened in December 2007, not long before the summer Olympic Games were held in the Chinese capital. The Mariinsky Opera and Ballet Companies were the first foreign ensembles to appear in a two-week series of performances which opened the Grand Theatre. In September 2011 the Mariinsky Theatre Symphony Orchestra again performed under the baton of Valery Gergiev at the National Center for the Performing Arts with a rendition of all of Tchaikovsky’s symphonies. In March this year Valery Gergiev performed at the National Grand Theatre with the London Symphony Orchestra.
