A debut by Oxana Skorik

On 7 July in the ballet Le Corsaire with choreography by Marius Petipa and Pyotr Gusev, Oxana Skorik will be performing the role of Medora for the first time.

A debut by Oxana Skorik

Oxana Skorik’s career as a soloist at the Mariinsky Theatre began with Adolphe Adam’s Giselle in which the dancer performed the title role. The next test of the dancer’s technical and acting abilities came with the extremely demanding dual role of Odette-Odile in Pyotr Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake with choreography by Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov. Spring this year was unusually intense for Skorik: the dancer demonstrated yet another facet of her performing skills as Carmen in the eponymous ballet by Alberto Alonso; moreover, Ballet magazine included her as a nominee in the category “Rising Star” for 2012.

Skorik’s debut in the famous popular ballet Le Corsaire sees the addition of yet another solo role to her repertoire. The ballet, with its adventurous plot of the exploits of pirates, shipwrecks, kidnappings, eastern bazaars and harems with Teimuraz Murvanidze’s sets is a series of colourful “improvisations on oriental themes.” Anna Pavlova, Tamara Karsavina and Olga Spesivtseva were among the legendary performers of the role of Medora the slave girl in Marius Petipa’s original version at the Mariinsky Theatre.
