Sofia Gumerova has made her debut as Carmen

On 30 October at the Concert Hall of the Mariinsky Theatre, ballet soloist Sofia Gumerova performed the role of Carmen in Alberto Alonso’s ballet Carmen Suite to music by Georges Bizet and Rodion Shchedrin for the first time.

Sofia Gumerova’s repertoire is based on lyric and romantic roles including Giselle, the Sylph, Princess Aurora, Odette-Odile, Medora, Raymonda, Fokine’s The Swan and Chopiniana. Critics have written of the “refined style” and “elegance and distinctiveness” of her performance as well as the “beauty and acting skills” in her dance. The vivid and passionate Carmen, a role that Sofia Gumerova performed for the first time, has revealed a new facet of the ballerina’s talent. Roles that she has performed prior to Carmen at first glance may seem remote from the image of the seductive Spanish girl, but it was in the roles of Mekhmeneh Bahnu in The Legend of Love, Zarema in The Fountain of Bakhchisarai and Phrygia in Spartacus that the ballerina’s gift for drama emerged, and in these roles her “romantically enigmatic” dance comes across as deeply heartfelt and openly emotional.

Sofia Gumerova’s partners on 30 October were Ilya Kuznetsov (José) and Denis Matvienko (Torero).
