Between the past and the future

The Mariinsky Ballet Company is continuing its tour at the Teatro Regio in Turin. The first part of the tour came to a sensational conclusion with the “hypnotic Alina Somova” in Camille Saint-Saëns’ The Swan and Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov’s Schéhérazade with the “divine Ulyana Lopatkina” and the “manly Danila Korsuntsev.”

During the tour, Italian audiences saw Vakhtang Chabukiani’s version of Marius Petipa’s La Bayadère for the first time. Previously Italy has seen Natalia Makarova’s version of La Bayadère, staged at the Teatro alla Scala. “Our version has three acts and ends with the Kingdom of Shades scene, in which thirty-two ballerinas come on-stage one after another, repeating exactly the same steps. It’s a fantastical sight to see,” said Yuri Fateyev, Director of the Mariinsky Ballet Company, to the Italian audience about the production.

The tour will conclude with a performance of Pyotr Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake with choreography by Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov. Between 28 October and 6 November this “most famous and most beloved 19th century ballet” will be performed twelve times.

The newspaper La Stampa published an interview with Yuri Fateyev in which the correspondent writes of the modern day Mariinsky Theatre’s attitude to the works of the “era of the Kirov Theatre” and its contemporaries.

Paying tribute to the “colossal” Spartacus, Yuri Fateyev stated that the theatre is planning productions by Benjamin Millepied, the choreographer of Black Swan, and A Midsummer Night’s Dream with choreography by Balanchine.

The press office of the Teatro Regio has commented that the tour by the Mariinsky Ballet Company has offered “an excellent opportunity to admire a legendary dance school that combines incredible technique and unsurpassed discipline.”
