Alexander Sivaev


Lighting Designer

Recipient of the Russian National Golden Mask theatre prize (2016).

Born in Moscow in 1985. In 2008 he graduated from the production faculty of the Moscow Art Theatre School, class of Damir Ismagilov. From 2007 to 2011 he worked as a lighting designer for the Bolshoi Theatre of Russia. For four years he studied under Gleb Filshtinsky, working as an assistant including Mariinsky Theatre productions (Otello and Christmas Eve) and the Bolshoi Theatre of Russia (Wozzeck and Don Giovanni).

Since 2014 he has been principal lighting designer of the Moscow Operetta Theatre. At the Mariinsky Theatre he has worked on productions of Moscow, Cheryomushki (2006), Benvenuto Cellini (2007, 2018), Les Contes d’Hoffmann (2011), The Lefthander (2013), Eugene Onegin (2014), The Golden Cockerel (2014), The Queen of Spades (2015), Bambi (2015), In the Jungle (2015), Symphony in Three Movements (2015), A Christmas Tale (2015), Carmen (2016), Not Love Alone (2017), The Tsar’s Bride (2018) and Pelléas et Mélisande 2019).

As a lighting designer he has worked on productions by the Bolshoi Theatre of Russia, the Chekhov Moscow Arts Theatre, the Moscow Pushkin Drama Theatre, the Sovremennik Theatre, the Theatre of Nations and the Lensoviet Theatre among others. Has created the lighting for many ice shows, as well as the musicals Zorro, Cinderella and The Sound of Music (the company Stage Entertainment).

The designer’s works have been nominated for a Golden Mask award on several occasions, among them Les Contes d’Hoffmann (Mariinsky Theatre, 2013), Uncle Vanya (Lensoviet Theatre, 2018), Nureyev (Bolshoi Theatre of Russia, 2019) and Hamlet (Lensoviet Theatre, 2019). He was also awarded for the play Flight at the Yevgeny Vakhtangov Theatre in Moscow (2016).
