Jacques Chatelet

At the start of his career as a lighting designer Jacques Chatelet worked with choreographers including Dominique Bagouet, Françoise Adret, Angelin Preljocaj, Catherine Diverrès, Jacques Dombrowski, Blanca Li, Régis Obadia, Anne-Marie Porras, Éric Vu-An, Marc Ribaud and Eric Margouet.
The numerous operas and ballets Chatelet has designed for include Aida, Madama Butterfly, Die Zauberflöte, Parade, Il barbiere di Siviglia, L’italiana in Algeri, Don Quichotte, Don Giovanni, Carmen, The Cunning Little Vixen, Le nozze di Figaro, Rigoletto, Norma, La donna del lago, La Gioconda, Turandot, La traviata, Le Sacre du printemps, Bolero, Cinderella and Bianca Li’s choreographic productions of Corazón Loco and Poeta en Nueva York (which received Spain’s most prestigious theatre prize in 2008) and the ballet Le Jardin des délices staged by the Choreography Festival in Montpelier and revived at the Théâtre des Champs Élysées. Chatelet has designed the lighting for the ballets Coppélia and The Nutcracker at the Wiener Staatsoper, Le Parc (choreography by Angelin Preljocaj), Coppélia at La Scala, Coppélia in Stockholm (choreography by Marc Ribaud) and María de Buenos Aires in Toulon (choreography by Eric Margouet).
He has also designed for several musicals including La Cage aux folles, Hello Dolly, Singing in the Rain (recipient of the Molière Prize in 2001 as best musical) and the French versions of productions of Titanic, Sugar, Sol en Cirque (production by Zazie) and Bébé Lilly (production by Adriano Sinivia) for Paris’ Cabaret Lido.
Le has designed the lighting for the operettas La Vie parisienne, Im Weißen Rößl, The Mikado (production by Jacques Duparc), Les Trois valses (production by Jean-Louis Grinda), La Fille du tambour major, Ciboulette, Barbe-bleue (production by Nadine Duffaut), Orphée aux enfers (production by Claire Servais) and the opera Le Caïd (production by Adriano Sinivia).
At the invitation of Eve Ruggieri he took part in the Musical Theatre in Antibes and the Paris Biennale des Antiquaires.
In Moscow he has designed the lighting for the ballet The Idiot after Dostoevsky (production by Régis Obadia) which received the  Seagull prize, the ballet Romeo and Juliet at the Macao Opera House, the musical Singing in the Rain in Montreal and La Gioconda and Faust in Tel Aviv (production by Paul-Emile Fourny). At the Chorégies d’Orange festival in he has designed the operas Rigoletto and Lucia di Lammermoor. In 2010 on receiving a repeat invitation from the festival, he designed the lighting for the opera Tosca and a joint concert of Natalie Dessay and Juan Diego Flórez.
In 2009 he designed the lighting for a production of Mozart after the play by Sacha Guitry (production by Bernard Pisani) in Tours and the opera Aida (production by Paul-Emile Fourny) at the Zenith Concert Hall in Nice as well as the Christmas lights in Marseille.
In 2010 Chatelet worked on productions of Les Noces (production by Angelin Preljocaj) in Stockholm, Die Dreigroschenoper (production by Bernard Pisani) in Reims and Metz, projects of Madrid’s Contemporary Opera House directed by Blanca Li, L’Homme de la Mancha (production by Jean-Louis Grinda) in Toulouse, Don Quichotte (production by Éric Vu-An) in Nice, La Perichòle (production by Bernard Pisani) in Metz and the avant-garde production Elektro Kif (choreography by Blanca Li). He also worked on a celebratory event for Cartier in Hong Kong.
Jacques Chatelet is regularly invited to work on productions by the Opéra d’Avignon and the Département de Vaucluse including La donna del lago and Barbe-bleue in 2003, Sugar, Ciboulette, Coppélia and La Fille du tambour major in 2004, New Year productions of Singing in the Rain and Les Trois valses in 2004-2005, La& traviata in 2007, a New Year production of Im Weißen Rößl in 2007-2008, Romeo and Juliet and Orphée aux enfers in 2008 and Aida and The Little Prince in 2010, with Faust planned for 2012.
Chatelet’s plans for the 2011-12 season include working on a revival of Faust at several opera houses, a production of La Gioconda at Opera di Palermo, the musical El amor brujo in Bordeaux, Coppélia at the Helsinki Opera House and Le Parc at the Mariinsky Theatre in St Petersburg.
