Toni Candeloro


Choreographer

Toni Candeloro graduated from the Princess Grace Academy in Monte-Carlo under the direction of Marika Besobrasova, a pupil of Julia Sedova, ballerina of St Petersburg’s Imperial Theatres. From the early 1980s he started his international career. Candeloro danced with the Balletto dell’Arena di Verona, the Ballet de Nancy, the Ballett Zürich, the Ballet Nacional de Cuba, the Ballet of the Theatro Municipal in Rio de Janeiro, appeared at galas at the Kirov Theatre (now Mariinsky), performing classical repertoire and productions by Michel Fokine, George Balanchine, Bronislava Nijinska, Léonide Massine, John Cranko, Uwe Scholz, Birgit Cullberg, John Neumeier. Toni Candeloro worked directly with Serge Lifar, Hans van Manen, Alvin Ailey and other choreographers. He performed Mercutio in John Cranko’s Romeo and Juliet, opposite Marcia Haydée and Richard Cragun. At the invitation of Rudolf Nureyev Toni Candeloro danced the pas de deux from the ballet Le Chant du compagnon errant by Maurice Béjart. Among his partners are to name: Carla Fracci, Alessandra Ferri, Galina Panova, Tamara Rojo, Lucía Lacarra.

He always has had a great interest in the history of dance and has dedicated himself to the research and study of ballets thanks to his encounters with numerous artists of the last generation of the Ballets Russes de Diaghilev, the Ballets Russes de Monte-Carlo and Bronislava Nijinska’s companies like Serge Lifar, Alicia Markova, Anton Dolin, Mia Slavenska, Frederic Franklin, up to Alexandra Danilova and others. During his long stay in Paris he trained and worked in close contact with the dancers Nina Tikhonova, Tatiana Krantzeva, Gilbert Canova, Serge Golovine, Milorad Miskovitch and others which were students of Olga Preobrajenska, Mathilde Kschessinska, Tamara Karsavina and Lubov Egorova. Toni Candeloro has staged works by Marius Petipa and choreographers of the Ballets Russes thanks to his active research documenting through oral tradition, the choreographic material with its corresponding style and technique. He has taught and given masterclasses focused on ballet heritage at the Conservatoire national supérieur de musique et de danse de Paris, the National Academy of Dance in Rome and the Vaganova Ballet Academy. He writes publications on dance and ballet and participates in numerous international conferences.

Toni Candeloro has a rich dance collection which includes sets (decor), costumes, photographs, private documents and works of art, etc. He has curated exhibitions in such international museums as the Museo Teatrale alla Scala, the State Russian Museum in St Petersburg, the Mart (Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art of Trento and Rovereto) and the Musei Civici di Venezia among others.
