Spanish connections
|
|
This November is dominated
by Spanish connections
for us. Yesterday our Orchestra went to Spain to give a tour of four cities. Our opera soloists together with artistic teams of Valencia new opera house under Valery Gergiev
gave a premiere
of Berlioz Les Troyens
last Saturday
and a few more runs
are to come. Later,
our Ballet company goes
to Valencia
with a short visit. At home,
on the Mariinsky Theatre
historic stage, we present a few
productions-favourites, all taking place in sunny Spain.
This November is going to be rather hot! :)

Our Orchestra on tour
|
|
|
During the first week of November our Orchestra tours
the north of Spain. In the capital of Catalonia area Barcelona we are joined by Denis Matsuyev,
who will perform Third Piano Concerto by Rachmaninov
with us. We played this concerto last month with Denis in Moscow
and very much look forward to performing it again in Japan next month before the public release of its SACD recording on our Mariinsky Label.
In Pamplona and Zaragoza our opera soloists, Chorus and Orchestra under Valery Gergiev
will perform the monumental Eighth Symphony
by Gustav Mahler. The Symphony is often
referred to as A Symphony of a Thousand. We performed this powerful, deep
and magnificent work a number of times, both in St Petersburg and on tour.
In Girona our Orchestra will perform
Mahlers Fifth Symphony. This orchestral tour could be thought of as an informal
start of our long-term project a series of complete Mahlers Symphonies. The Orchestra of the Mariinsky Theatre, a team of great command of professionalism, will present the cycle to St Petersburg audiences this season within the framework
of our subscription series The Mahler century.

Les Troyens: from Valencia to St Petersburg
|
|
|
The grand opera dilogie Les Troyens
by Hector Berlioz was premiered last Saturday
on the stage of Palau de les Arts Reina Sofía
in Valencia. This marks the start of our joint project with this theatre as well as with the Warsaw National Opera on staging this great operatic masterpiece. A few of our opera soloists are engaged
in a series of performances in Valencia and the orchestra of this theatre is conducted by Valery Gergiev.

Palau de les Arts Reina Sofía
was formally opened four years ago. It is an interesting architectural piece, that has quickly
become a famous landmark in Valencia. In a few seasons
the theatre has received an international acclaim and many famous musicians have performed in this cultural centre that hosts four stages under one roof.
This production will arrive in St Petersburg at the end of December and will be presented at the Mariinsky Theatre by our opera and ballet soloists,
chorus and orchestra under Valery Gergiev.

Our Ballet on tour
|
|
|
Our Ballet company makes a debut on the stage of Palau de les Arts Reina Sofía
in Valencia, presenting a triple bill of Mikhail
Fokine ballets. In Shekherezade we will be joined by a renowned dancer Carlos Acosta.
Mikhail Fokines ballets demonstrate a very special page in the history of the Mariinsky Theatre
ballet. The choreographer had created a unique style
of Les Ballets Russes in the beginning of the XX century. There will be only one performance of these ballets at the Mariinsky Theatre until the end of 2009.

Continuing Prokofievs series
|
|
We continue a series of performances on Prokofievs works. In two evenings, on 10 and 11 November, we present an opera and a ballet production. Romeo and Juliet
is the production in the original choreography and scenery, which is performed at the Mariinsky Theatre
since its 1940 premiere as it was seen by the composer himself. The premiere of Prokofievs fifht opera Semyon Kotko,
which was given here ten years ago, was a sort of re-discovery, as it demonstrated completely unknown
aspects of Prokofievs music that put it way
beyond any ideology or politics.

An atmosphere of a Ukrainian village during the civil war is depicted in this opera in a distinctive way. Our production puts a focus on lyrical scenes of main characters romantic
relations, which in a very natural way complement the deepest opera ideas.
This is one of those rare productions,
that keeps the public in a strong emotional
thrill and takes their complete attention, as it was written by Prokofiev with the ideal
understanding of senses of his audience.

Probably, this is the most famous ballet by Prokofiev and the most ever popular ballet about love. This choreographic version of the tragedy
by Shakespeare was first seen on the Mariinsky Theatre stage (in 1940
State Academic Theatre of Opera and Ballet named after Kirov). It had been staged by Leonid
Lavrovsky, who closely worked with Prokofiev on this production. This is an amazingly touching
and thrilling performance.

November organ recitals at our Concert Hall
|
|
The new organ has been launched
last month in our Concert Hall. In November we start
a project that looks
at the four centuries of organ music. In order to demonstrate a rich
potential of our new instrument we decided to invite
some of the most gifted organists, that are going to present a broad repertoire this month. These works
reflect various styles by individual composers as well as give a good chance to explore different epochs in developing the art of organ works, from the XVII century up until our days.
