Shurale

This is a revival of a well-known work that was premiered at the Mariinsky (the then Kirov) in the 1950s. A bright performance in generous and colourful scenery, arranged to the music based on oriental themes. This ballet is one of the cornerstones in the Mariinsky history.

We opened the new concert season with French music. This concert also marks the start of our subscription series Eternal Music that features some sacred works by Mozart, Schubert, Berlioz, Brahms and Verdi. There’s still a chance to secure the best seats for all these concerts by purchasing a series. Don’t miss!

For the first time we perform the Berlioz's epic opera in one evening, which is an enormous effort. We are planning to premiere a fully staged production on 25 December 2009. The work comprises lots of beautiful orchestral passages, elegant vocal roles as well as picturesque ballet scenes. Keep an eye on our updates.

Launching the new organ at the Mariinsky Concert Hall

Start of the new season also marks a great technical upgrade in our Concert Hall. Over the summer break we completed the works on installing the organ. This was a long anticipated thing, since it gives us an opportunity for extending our performances in many unusual ways. We expect to give more massive works that require enormous resources such as a large choir and an organ. We also have ongoing plans of inviting famous organists to perform in the Hall. This way we ensure that our audiences can explore a rich variety of music genres.

“Artist of the month”: Vladimir Feltsman

In January 2009 we started an ambitious initiative Artist of the month that is targeted at bringing the most sought after artists to perform at the Mariinsky Concert Hall. In a series of concerts (usually three) within a month you get a chance of exploring the art of a particular performer. Previously, such famous artists as Alexei Volodin, Denis Matsuyev, Sergey Khachatryan and Yuri Bashmet were in focus of our project. Both we and our guests take this collaboration extremely seriously, which means that we carefully select the works that present an artist from multiple perspectives.

This month we are proud to host a distinguished Russian pianist Vladimir Feltsman who will perform in three evenings together with the Mariinsky Orchestra as a soloist as well as conductor and also in a piano solo recital.

Mariinsky on tour in October

As usual, touring forms an important part of our activities. This way we reach our audiences all over the world. This is a part of our cultural mission.

This month sees orchestra trips to Moscow and the UK.

We start our touring from a short visit to Moscow. The Mariinsky Orchestra under Valery Gergiev and Igor Gruppman performs works by Grieg and Rachmaninov along with Denis Matsuyev, who is a distinguished Russian pianist working closely with the Mariinsky. Later this season we are releasing a new recording of Rachmaninov’s concertos performed by Denis on our new Mariinsky Label recording studio.
