  Ballet revival Scotch Symphony

On 30 October we present the first ballet premiere of the season reviving Balanchine’s Scotch Symphony. For a long time now many ballet experts called our ballet company “The Home of Petipa”. Whilst we are proud to bear this name, we are equally pleased to extend our repertoire with George Balanchine’s legacy, presenting works that are new to us, as well as reviving some of those ballets that have proved to be firm favourites with the public.

As in the case with many of Balanchine’s ballets, in Scotch Symphony the dance is closely linked to the music. Each motion in the dance perfectly depicts each and every minute musical intonation. The flavour of Scotland is convincingly expressed in both the melody and the folk costumes.

On the same evening as Scotch Symphony we are presenting Theme and Variations, other work by Balanchine and also In the Night, a ballet created by his contemporary and colleague from the New York City Ballet period Jerome Robbins. These works, both revived last season, have been very well received by our audiences.

Our prima-ballerina Ulyana Lopatkina stars in Balanchine’s Scotch Symphony (30 October) and in Robbins’ In the Night (6 November). In June, Ulyana told about some of the breathtaking experiences of her performances in the classical ballet Swan Lake by Petipa. Balanchine’s classics are no less important or challenging for the ballerina and they reqire an enormous amount of time for rehearsals and great emotional commitment.

This May we revived Jerome Robbins’ In the Night. The ballet was set by Ben Huys, who is also setting Scotch Symphony. In an interview the coach of The Robbins Rights Trust tells about his collaboration with our ballet company. He is delighted to note the superb level of skills and expertise of our dancers, and calls them “la crème de la crème” of ballet professionalism.

  Operatic Verdi on stage

This week we are presenting three of Verdi’s masterpieces on our main stage.

Verdi’s legacy is extremely important to us, as one of the world’s leading opera companies and it is one of our fundamental principles to meet the finest repertoire standards. We are concerned about a large number of the great classical works and together our productions cover a vast range in terms of expressiveness and interpretation: from the strong classical tradition to the novelty of experimental ideas.

Currently there are ten operas by Giuseppe Verdi in our repertoire. We are presenting three of them later this week: Nabucco, Falstaff and Aida. These performances feature some of our top opera soloists, well-known to our audiences and who have received the greatest acclaim on numerous occasions.

A rare constellation of the stars on one stage within one week!

This is a co-production with Moscow’s Helikon-Opera theatre, which is renowned for its unusual experimental approach to staging the opera. The producer of this version is the Helikon’s artistic director Dmitry Bertman. The result is a vibrant and extravagant opera production.

This staging of Verdi’s last masterpiece is full of both sparkling humour and serious notes, full of both juvenile scenes and deep ideas about human values.

Falstaff

At the end of his long and magnificent career the eighty-year-old Verdi suddenly produced such an unusual, exquisite, ironically rueful and teasing …  “Falstaff”

Aida is one of the most popular operas by Verdi, is in great demand at any opera house in the world. This opera has been performed several hundred times on the Mariinsky stage over the past few decades.

Aida

The staging is bright, emotionally deep… traditional in the best sense.

  Our new audio recordings

This month our orchestra and chorus gave a tour of the United Kingdom under Valery Gergiev.

In Birmingham we enjoyed an unusual and interesting collaboration with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra and CBSO Chorus. Together with these ensembles we performed the Requiem (Grande messe des morts) by Berlioz. The concert was recorded on CD and the audience could purchase a copy immediately after the concert as they were leaving the hall. This unusual project drew a very wide response and nearly two thirds of concert goers opted to buy a recording the same evening. It should be mentioned here, that both the concert and the recording took place twice: on both 14 and 15 October, which means that there is a great opportunity to compare these two performances, each of them beyond doubt unique. These recordings have been made by the prestigious EMI Group.

On 19 October we released a third audio recording on our recently launched studio Mariinsky Label. We included five Tchaikovsky’s works there, which feature most sincere patriotic moods and composer’s admiration for the greatness of the country.
