War and Peace — the operatic blockbuster returns

This month we revive Prokofiev’s most powerful operatic work War and Peace. This is an enormous production that features many of our best opera soloists.

We began our deep and dedicated exploration of Prokofiev’s musical legacy back in 1991 by presenting a festival marking his centenary. Since then we have performed the complete series of Prokofiev’s operas for our audiences in St Petersburg. Many of our productions of Prokofiev’s operas and ballets we took on tour to Europe, America and Asia.

Prokofiev’s music is of particular importance to Valery Gergiev, as he believes Prokofiev to be one of the greatest and most unique composers of the 20th century.

Over the last two decades our Orchestra, Chorus, Opera and Ballet, according to critics, have given some extraordinary interpretations of Prokofiev’s works. We have performed all of his symphonies and concertos, operas and cantatas as well as his most famous ballets. Many works have been recorded on CD and DVD, whilst some of them have been performed for the first time ever.

The large-scale production of War and Peace that we are presenting early next week is a result of several years’ work, which required an incredible level of involvement of all our artists and staff.

This gorgeous operatic production depicts huge scale of the battle scenes of Borodino and Moscow burns as well as very intimate, lyric scenes featuring Natasha Rostova, Andrey Bolkonsky and Pierre Bezukhov. Andrey Konchalovsky’s production (premiered in 2000) showcases the most thrilling parts of the opera and complements the music perfectly.

This production is the result of a unique collaboration between four great world-class opera companies: the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden (London), Teatro alla Scala (Milan), The Metropolitan Opera (New York) and the Mariinsky Theatre. Moreover, we took this production on tour to Madrid, Tokyo, Moscow and Salzburg Festival to the greatest acclaim.

Now this production returns to St Petersburg, to our stage.
Only three performances this season!

More Prokofiev at the Mariinsky
In the course of the first months of this season, we are reviving some of the best works by Prokofiev for musical theatre.
