Mariinsky Theatre During the New Year Holidays

On the last day of the departing year, 31 December, the Mariinsky Theatre offers an event-packed programme across all its stages. The Historical Stage will showcase Tchaikovsky’s ballet The Nutcracker (12:00, 18:00), the Concert Hall will feature Klinichev’s children’s opera The Little Prince and a New Year’s concert by the Stradivarius Ensemble, while the New Stage will host two performances of Mozart’s opera Die Zauberflöte (11:00, 18:30) and the closing concert of the XVIII Mariinsky International Piano Festival under the baton of Valery Gergiev.

The festive events at the Mariinsky Theatre in the new year will commence on 2 January, with a varied programme delighting audiences with both long-standing classics and recent productions. Following musical-theatrical traditions of the 1980s and 1990s, Mariinsky will present beloved performances twice a day allowing the audience to choose a convenient time. They will equally enchant both children and adults, extending the magical holiday atmosphere.

On 2 January at 13:00 and 19:00 the New Stage of the Mariinsky Theatre will transform into an enchanted forest with Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte. On 3 January at 13:00 and 19:00 the Historical Stage will feature Rimsky-Korsakov’s The Tale of Tsar Saltan in the scenography of Vladimir Firer inspired by Ivan Bilibin’s sketches. Lovers of the Russian style should also note Glinka’s Ruslan and Lyudmila on 6 January at 13:00 and 19:00 – this production revives the decorations and costumes by Alexander Golovin and Konstantin Korovin from the 1904 staging as well as Michel Fokine’s 1917 choreography.

On 4 January at 13:00 and 19:00 the New Stage will host Johann Strauss’ vibrant operetta Die Fledermaus. On 5 January at 14:00 and 19:00 the audience will be treated to Shchedrin’s A Christmas Tale – a mesmerizing musical interpretation of the story of the twelve months. On 7 January at 12:00 and 19:00 the Historical Stage will echo with Rimsky-Korsakov’s Christmas Eve – a “folk tale” as defined by the composer himself in a spectacular production.

The Concert Hall’s programme offers a variety of performances for all preferences. On 2 January at 19:00 Orff’s famous cantata Carmina Burana will be performed. On 3 January a Christmas concert And I Hear the Harp’s Magic Sound, and Christmas Is Coming will feature Sofia Kiprskaya (harp), Irina Rozanova (organ), Nikolai Khotin (percussion), Yekaterina Savinkova (soprano), Sergei Skorokhodov (tenor), Mikhail Petrenko (bass) and Timofey Semenkov (discant) along with the Soloists Ensemble of the Mariinsky Academy of Young Opera Singers and the Mariinsky Theatre’s Children’s Choir.

A special star-studded event of the New Year holidays will take place on 6 January at 19:00 – renowned soprano Albina Shagimuratova will sing Rachmaninoff’s romances and participate in the concert performance of his opera Francesca da Rimini.

On 7 January at 13:00 the Concert Hall will resonate with Bach’s Christmas Oratorio for soloists, choir and orchestra (Parts I, II, III, and VI), and at 18:00 the same stage will host a New Year’s programme by the Mariinsky Stradivarius Ensemble conducted by Lorenz Nasturica-Herschcowici.

For its youngest viewers the Mariinsky Theatre has also prepared a bright series of events. On 3 January at 12:00 Banevich’s children’s opera Murych the Cat will be performed, and on 6 January at 12:00 – Humperdinck’s Hänsel und Gretel. On 4 January at 12:00 there will be the concert for children and parents Magicians featuring Violetta Lukyanenko, Tsvetana Omelchuk, Denis Zakirov, Dmitry Koleushko and Yaroslav Petryanik. On 5 January at 12:00 the Mariinsky Brass Ensemble will hold a New Year’s concert for children.

A reminder that until 14 January the Mariinsky Theatre continues to present the beloved ballet fairy tale – Tchaikovsky’s famous The Nutcracker in several versions. Two performances are in Vasily Vainonen’s classic staging: one in Simon Virsaladze’s canonical scenography, the other in Vladimir Firer and Alexander Khramtsov’s scenography (St Petersburg State Academic Leonid Yacobson Ballet Theatre); the third version of this work is the unique The Nutcracker by Mikhail Shemyakin (choreography by Kirill Simonov).
