The year, rich in significant musical anniversaries, culminates with another important celebration – 22 December marks the 165th birth anniversary of Giacomo Puccini. The Mariinsky Theatre announces a month dedicated to the great Italian composer, releasing a thematic subscription. All of Puccini's mature operas will be performed across the theatre's three stages.
The influence of Puccini, a classic of late 19th and early 20th century Italian opera who deepened and expanded the verismo movement, on the world of music is immeasurable. In his works, the composer addressed intense life dramas and sharp conflicts, enriching the plots with lyrical details.
Puccini's expressive and melodious music captivates with its variety of motifs and remarkable integrity. The composer did not confine himself to European stories based on world literature classics – he recreated the uniqueness of Japan in Madama Butterfly, depicted the years of the American Gold Rush in La fanciulla del West, and portrayed a fantastical China in Turandot. Different worlds are primarily embodied musically – with vivid genre episodes featuring local color.
Currently, the Mariinsky Theatre's repertoire includes nine full-scale and one-act operas by the great Italian. All of these will be featured in the thematic Month of Giacomo Puccini at the Mariinsky: Manon Lescaut (08 January), Madama Butterfly (15 January), Turandot (17 January), La Bohème (18 January), Tosca (28 January), La fanciulla del West (30 January), Il tabarro, Suor Angelica, and Gianni Schicchi (1 February). The audience will also be treated to a concert performance of the rare opera La rondine (23 January) and the string quartet Crisantemi (21 January) at a concert by the Mariinsky Theatre's Stradivari Ensemble.
All operas and the concert are unified under a thematic subscription – special prices apply when purchasing tickets for three or more events.
