On 8 and 9 December at 12:00 PM and 7:00 PM the historic stage of the Mariinsky Theatre will host the first ballet premiere of the season – Anyuta, set to the music of Valery Gavrilin. This upcoming performance marks the first stage production of the ballet in St Petersburg following its original television version created in Leningrad. The choreographer and director of this production is Vladimir Vasiliev, People's Artist of the USSR.
The famed TV Anyuta ballet first graced screens in 1982 and instantly captured viewers' hearts. The brainchild behind this televised ballet set to Gavrilin's music was Leningrad director and screenwriter Alexander Belinsky. He invited Vladimir Vasiliev to choreograph and co-direct the production. The music, an amalgamation of various works by Gavrilin, was orchestrated by Stanislav Gorkovenko, the musical director and principal conductor of the ballet, upon the composer's recommendation. Filming took place at Lenfilm with the participation of Leningrad artists and the legendary Ekaterina Maximova, a ballet dancer of rare artistic gift as well as Vladimir Vasiliev himself.
"In the repertoire of the Mariinsky Theatre have always been and are works by contemporary composers. I consider it my duty to acquaint the public with modern music. We have performed compositions by Rodion Shchedrin, Boris Tishchenko, and we continue to present music by Sergei Slonimsky, Alexander Tchaikovsky, Vladimir Tarnopolsky, Andrey Golovin, Alexander Lokshin, Alexander Smelkov. At the festival celebrating the 200th anniversary of Nikolai Gogol we enjoyed works by contemporary St Petersburg and Yekaterinburg composers – Svetlana Nesterova, Anastasia Bespalova, and Vyacheslav Kruglik. I am delighted that to the choral and chamber compositions of Leningrad's Valery Gavrilin, already performed at the Mariinsky Theatre, we are now adding the Anyuta ballet – a major and interesting work in the choreography of Vladimir Vasiliev," notes Valery Gergiev.
The leading roles will be performed on 8 December by Renata Shakirova, Alexander Sergeyev, Roman Belyakov, Alexei Timofeyev, and Maxim Izmeshev; on 9 December at 12:00 PM by Maria Shirinkina, Maxim Zyuzin, Ruslan Stenyushkin, Roman Malyshev, and Yaroslav Baibordin; and on December 9 at 7:00 PM by Nadezhda Batoeva, Alexander Sergeyev, Konstantin Zverev, Nikita Korneev, and Maxim Izmeshev.
