The Primorsky Stage of the Mariinsky Theatre will Present the A Thousand and One Nights Ballet for the First Time in the Capital of Qatar

In December the ballet troupe of the Primorsky Stage of the Mariinsky Theatre will perform in the capital of Qatar, Doha, for the first time. The Qatari audience will have the opportunity to witness the ballet A Thousand and One Nights composed by Fikret Amirov and choreographed by the Artistic Director of the ballet troupe, Honored Artist of the Russian Federation Eldar Aliyev. The performances will take place at the Qatar National Convention Centre (QNCC) from the 5th to the 8th of December.

These extensive tours along the shores of the Persian Gulf will mark the conclusion of the Primorsky troupe's activities in 2023. Since the beginning of the season the artists have already presented their performances at the Mariinsky Theatre in St Petersburg as part of their traditional summer tours. In September they performed on the Historical Stage of the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow and at the Mariinsky Theatre's branch in Vladikavkaz. In October they participated in the rich cultural program of the Primorsky Krai Cultural Days in Harbin.

Eldar Aliyev spoke about the upcoming tours, saying, “It is very important for us that the performance, based on the literary masterpiece A Thousand and One Nights, which is a monument of Persian and Arab literature, is embraced by the Middle Eastern audience as spiritually close to them. We aimed to reflect the best traditions of Eastern culture in it, and therefore, we hope that all the performances will be successful. After a series of shows in Qatar, the ballet will be presented again in St Petersburg, where we will showcase our production in February-March during the traditional winter tours at the Mariinsky Theatre. We also plan performances in Beijing and, of course, on our home stage in Vladivostok towards the end of the season.”

The performances in the capital of Qatar will be accompanied by the Mariinsky Orchestra conducted by Eyyub Guliyev, featuring the Choir of the Primorsky Stage. Vocal parts will be performed by soloists from the opera troupe of the Primorsky Stage, Anastasiya Kikot and Alina Mikhailik. Nataliya Medvedeva and invited musician Ramin Azimov from Baku will play the traditional Azerbaijani instrument tar, which is part of the orchestra.

The leading roles will be performed by prima ballerinas Anna Samostrelova and Liliya Berezhnova, premieres Sergey Umanets and Viktor Mulygin, soloists Yuri Zinnurov, Saki Nisida, Arina Nagase, Lada Sartakova, Alexandra Shalimova, as well as artists Sergey Borovykh, Lev Ponomarev, and Erlan Suunbek.
