Valery Gergiev Leads Mariinsky Theatre on its Grandest Chinese Tour to Date

In a groundbreaking move, the esteemed Mariinsky Theatre, under the direction of Valery Gergiev, is launching its broadest-ever tour across China. Spanning from 10 October to 5 November, the theatre will regale audiences in six distinguished Chinese cities: Beijing, Shanghai, Nanjing, Harbin, Taiyuan, and Zhuhai with an eclectic repertoire of ballet and opera performances, as well as symphonic concerts.

The tour will be inaugurated at the National Centre for the Performing Arts in Beijing with Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake from 10–12 October. The capital's aficionados will also have the pleasure of witnessing Minkus’s vibrant Don Quixote on 14 and 15 October at the Taihu Theatre.

Following Beijing, the ballet ensemble will travel to the historic city of Nanjing. At the Jiangsu Centre for the Performing Arts, Swan Lake will take the stage on 19 and 20 October, and Don Quixote will be presented on 21 and 22 October. Subsequently, Taiyuan will be graced with four consecutive performances of Swan Lake from 26–29 October. The ballet segment of the tour will culminate in Zhuhai, with Don Quixote scheduled for 2 November and Swan Lake from 3–5 November.

Frontlining these ballet masterpieces are Mariinsky’s premier artists, including Vladimir Shklyarov, Timur Askerov, Nadezhda Batoeva, Oksana Skorik, Renata Shakirova, Konstantin Zverev, Philipp Stepin, Maria Khoreva, and Nikita Korneyev.

In the realm of opera, this tour holds profound significance for the Mariinsky Theatre. China will be privy to Wagner's epic tetralogy, Der Ring des Nibelungen. The preceding acts, Das Rheingold and Die Walküre, underwent creative revamps at the Mariinsky-2. Valery Gergiev, the mastermind behind this fresh conception, now introduces the newly interpreted Siegfried and Götterdämmerung in China. These dramatic tales will resonate within the opulent confines of the Shanghai Grand Theatre from 16–22 October.

A constellation of opera luminaries, including Yevgeny Nikitin, Mikhail Vekua, Tatiana Pavlovskaya, Mikhail Petrenko, Yuri Vorobyev, Anna Kiknadze, Andrei Popov, Yulia Matochkina, Irina Churilova, Zhanna Dombrovskaya, Yevgeny Akimov, Anastasia Kalagina, Elena Vitman, Zlata Bulycheva, Oxana Shilova, Angelika Minasova, Yaroslav Petryanik, Vadim Kravets, Darya Ryabokon, and others, will breathe life into these roles. The legendary Valery Gergiev himself will be at the helm, conducting these masterworks.

Additionally, between 17–29 October, China will be the backdrop for nine concerts by the Mariinsky Theatre Orchestra, under Gergiev's baton. These melodious evenings, spread across Shanghai, Beijing, Nanjing, and Harbin, will feature excerpts from iconic ballets and operas, along with symphonies by both Russian and global composers. A pinnacle moment will be marked by the Orchestra’s performance on 26 and 27 October at the National Centre for the Performing Arts in Beijing, inaugurating its brand-new hall.

This monumental tour not only symbolizes the deepening of cultural ties between Russia and China but also solidifies Mariinsky Theatre's esteemed status on the international stage.
