On 16 October, the vibrant part of Mariinsky Theatre's grand tour in China begins – the opera troupe led by Valery Gergiev. The St Petersburg artists will introduce the Chinese audience to Richard Wagner's monumental tetralogy Der Ring des Nibelungen in its updated stage versions.
In the evening, the Shanghai Grand Theatre will host the first performance of this grand saga – Das Rheingold. The main roles will be performed by Yuri Vorobiev, Yaroslav Petryanik, Mikhail Vekua, Zhanna Dombrovskaya, Yulia Matochkina, Darya Ryabokon, Andrei Popov, Zlata Bulycheva, Mikhail Petrenko, Vadim Kravets, Anna Kiknadze, Gleb Peryazev, Yevgeny Akimov, and Anastasia Kalagina. At the helm of the Mariinsky Orchestra is one of the world's leading interpreters of Wagner's music, Valery Gergiev. "Undoubtedly, such a grand project here in China is one of the main events for us this year!" emphasized Valery Gergiev.
Over the upcoming week, following Das Rheingold, all the operas of Der Ring des Nibelungen will be presented at the Shanghai Grand Theatre: On 18 October – Die Walküre, 20 October – Siegfried, and 22 October – Götterdämmerung. Specifically, during this tour in China, the premieres of the new stage versions of the last two operas of the famous German composer's epic will take place. The updated Das Rheingold and Die Walküre were presented to the St Petersburg audience at the end of the previous season.
