From October 8 to 11, the Mariinsky Orchestra, under the direction of Valery Gergiev, will tour Turkey. Over these three days the orchestra and the maestro are scheduled to perform in Ankara, Istanbul, and the ancient amphitheater of the historic city of Aspendos.
The tour will commence on October 8 with a concert at the ancient Aspendos amphitheater – one of the oldest Roman theaters in Turkey, constructed in the II century and remarkably preserved to this day. In this unique historical venue, audiences will be treated to excerpts from Prokofiev's Romeo and Juliet ballet and Rimsky-Korsakov's symphonic suite Scheherazade.
On October 10, the Mariinsky Orchestra will join forces with the Ankara Symphony Orchestra, with both under the baton of Valery Gergiev. They will perform at the Concert Hall of the Presidential Symphony Orchestra in Ankara, a contemporary edifice known for its unique architectural and acoustical design, opened in December 2020. The highlight of the concert will be Shostakovich's Seventh Symphony.
The tour will culminate in Istanbul at the Atatürk Cultural Center. This city icon reopened its doors in 2021 after an extensive renovation. On October 11, under Gergiev's direction, the Mariinsky Orchestra will enchant audiences with selections from Tchaikovsky's The Nutcracker ballet and his Sixth (Pathétique) Symphony.
