The Mariinsky Theatre’s summer premiere – a production of Igor Stravinsky’s works Renard, Mavra and The Fairy’s Kiss – is to beperformed at the new theatre on 11 February as part of the Golden Mask festival’s competition programme. This new work by the theatre has been nominated for the award in eight categories.
The Mariinsky Theatre’s production of Renard. Mavra. The Fairy’s Kiss has been included in the competition in the category “Best ballet production of the previous season”. Nominations for the Golden Mask have gone to choreographer Maxim Petrov, designers Alyona Pikalova (sets) and Sergei Rylko (video), costume designer Uldus Bakhtiozina and lighting designer Konstantin Binkin.
Three ballet soloists are competing in the performing category for their roles in the ballet The Fairy’s Kiss: Alexander Sergeev for the role of the Youth and Maria Bulanova and Renata Shakirova for the role of the Fairy.
The longlist for the Golden Mask, compiled by experts from among the most significant productions of the season, also includes the Mariinsky Theatre’s productions of Seven Sonatas, Le Bœuf sur le toit and The Maid of Orleans. The special prize “For an outstanding contribution to the development of theatre art” in 2022 has gone to Valery Gergiev, Artistic and General Director of the Mariinsky Theatre. Maxim Petrov, who last season received a Mask for the ballet Russian Dead Ends – II, is participating in the competition this year as the creator of two productions: Renard. Mavra. The Fairy’s Kiss for the Mariinsky Theatre and Piano Concerto at the Samara Opera and Ballet Theatre. The jury of the Golden Mask is currently reviewing all productions selected by the expert council. There are eighty-one productions this year. The names of the prize-winners will be announced on 20 April at the Stanislavsky and Nemirovich-Danchenko Moscow Music Theatre. The awards ceremony will be broadcast live.
