Valery Gergiev and the Mariinsky Orchestra begin a tour in Spain

Today, 18 January, sees the start of a tour by the Mariinsky Orchestra in Spain. It is to last six days, during which time the ensemble will visit Valencia, Madrid, Barcelona and Girona. All of the concerts are to be conducted by maestro Gergiev. The performances will feature the pianist Alexei Volodin, who has long enjoyed a fruitful collaborative relationship with the St Petersburg musicians.

Valery Gergiev has included Berlioz' Symphonie fantastique, Tchaikovsky's Sixth Symphony, Schubert's Ninth Symphony, Rachmaninoff's Second Piano Concerto, Prokofiev's Classical symphony and the overtures from Wagner's Tannhäuser and Parsifal in the tour programme. As recommended by local health boards, all performances will take place without any intervals.

This evening the St Petersburg orchestra will be appearing at the Palau de la Música in Valencia: the programme features works by Berlioz and Rachmaninoff. Audiences will be presented with two programmes at the Auditorio Nacional de Música in Madrid (19 and 20 January) and the L’Auditori hall in Barcelona (21 and 22 January). In Girona (23 January) the orchestra will also be performing twice – in order to adhere to limitations regarding numbers of members of the public attending, the concert is being split into two "sessions".

The last time that the Mariinsky Orchestra was on tour was in October; on that occasion the musicians performed in Paris and Luxembourg.
