The Snow Maiden: an adapted version for family audiences

A run continues of the first performances of Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov's opera The Snow Maiden staged by Anna Matison and created by the acclaimed set-design tandem of Alexander Orlov and Irina Cherednikova. On Saturday 12 September at 19.00 and on Sunday 13 September at 12.00 and 19.00, the opera will be presented for the first time in a new version that has been adapted for family audiences (lasting 2 hours and 30 minutes). Having made several cuts to the music, the production team has nevertheless succeeded in retaining the integrity of Rimsky-Korsakov's musical canvas as well as the narrative of the opera itself, focussing attention on the most important aspects of the protagonists' interrelations. Now this new stage reading of this musically and dramatically rich and intense fairytale may be judged by younger audiences among others.

The premiere of The Snow Maiden which took place last week proved a veritable sensation among the public and resulted in several discoveries among the performers of the lead roles – both those making their debuts and those who had already appeared in a previous production by Alexander Galibin but who have been able to reveal their art in new ways in this new version. The casts of the first performances may also be seen in upcoming performances of the adapted version.
