On 23 July at the Concert Hall of the Mariinsky Theatre there will be a performance of Act I of the opera The Maid of Orleans by Tchaikovsky – one of the works that has been rehearsed bythe company during the period of self-isolation. The roles are to be performed by Yulia Matochkina (Joan of Arc), Yevgeny Nikitin (Thibaut d'Arc), Denis Zakirov (Raymond), Yuri Vlasov (Bertrand) and Gleb Peryazev (a Soldier). The evening will also feature a performance of Tchaikovsky's Violin Concerto, part of the mandatory programme of the Tchaikovsky Competition, to be played by Pavel Milyukov – recipient of the 3rd prize at that prestigious competition in 2015. The Mariinsky Orchestra will be conducted by Valery Gergiev.
The Maid of Orleans is an historically important opera for the Mariinsky Theatre. It was here in 1881 that the world premiere of this monumental opus took place. The complexity ofthe composer's idea when coupled with the mixed receptionthe opera received from the people of St Petersburg meant that it did not remain in the repertoire for long, as had beenthe case with other works by Tchaikovsky. In the year that marksthe one hundred and eightieth anniversary sincethe composer's birth, the Mariinsky Theatre is once again setting its sights on The Maid of Orleans, albeit having had rehearsals with the performers in the unusual conditions of self-isolation.
It should be noted that several new titles, now appearing in the concert repertoire of the Mariinsky Theatre, may possibly be staged in full in the future.
