The Mariinsky Theatre continues the Stars of the White Nights festival with Tchaikovsky's opera Iolanta

The Mariinsky Theatre is delighted to announce the continuation of the Stars of the White Nights festival. Soon the Mariinsky's venues will see a major series of events featuring lead soloists of the opera and ballet companies, the orchestra and guest musicians. Since 19 March, the daily online broadcasts on the platform mariinsky.tv and on the social networking sites have amassed almost 100 million hits, and in returning to its concert programmes, the theatre is planning a gradual reduction in the number of screenings of recorded performances, moving to broadcasting live online.

The first event is to be a concert performance of Pyotr Tchaikovsky's opera Iolanta which will take place on 7 July and which will mark 180 years since the birth of the composer. The lead roles are to be performed by a strong cast featuring the finest soloists of the Mariinsky Opera, among them Irina Churilova (Iolanta), Stanislav Trofimov (René, King of Provence), Sergei Skorokhodov (Count Vaudémont), Alexei Markov (Robert) and Vladislav Sulimsky (Ibn-Hakia). The Mariinsky Orchestra will be conducted by Valery Gergiev.

Public safety will be ensured through special measures developed together with Russia's Federal Service for Oversight of Consumer Protection and Welfare and which were tested at the opening of the festival on 20 June as part of a trial regime. At the Mariinsky II, which seats 2000, up to 1000 people may attend. On entering the theatre patrons will have their temperature taken, and in the foyer prior to the start of the performance they must observe social distancing; in the auditorium, the principle of "chessboard seating" will be in use, while the use of individual means of protection will be a mandatory requirement throughout audience presence in the building (members of the public without face coverings and gloves will be denied entry to the theatre). It should be noted that all performers and theatre staff who will be present at this performance have previously been tested.

In planning the programme of the Stars of the White Nights festival, the Mariinsky Theatre has reacted to requests from the public who have been with the theatre and supported its staff throughout these three months – the public may look forward to a rich and intense programme, seeing their favourite performers and many surprises. The dates of other festival events will be announced soon. Tickets may be acquired on the official website www.mariinsky.ru.
