On 25 June at 20.00 Moscow Time mariinsky.tv and the international cultural project Russian Seasons will together be broadcasting the "concert with a message" A Cultural Bridge Remembered, dedicated to the 75th anniversary of the end of World War II. The recording will be broadcast via numerous streaming services throughout the world, and works by composers from Russia, Germany, France, Great Britain and the United States will provide that cultural bridge that unites us all.
The concert will see the participation of musicians of the Mariinsky Orchestra – both acclaimed and young artistes, Mariinsky Opera soloist Elena Stikhina (soprano) and choreographer Vladimir Varnava, who has staged and performed a short piece especially for this project. They will be joined by famed Russian pianist Denis Matsuev and the German cellist Jens Peter Maintz, one of the pieces to be conducted by Valery Gergiev.
The programme is based on works written during the Second World War by composers from Russia, France, Great Britain and the USA. It is to include highlights from Sextet for Wind Quintet and Piano by Francis Poulenc, String Quartet No 2 by Benjamin Britten, the song cycle Twelve Poems of Emily Dickinson by Aaron Copland, Piano Sonata No 7 by Sergei Prokofiev performed by Denis Matsuev and Suite for Cello Solo No 5 by Johann Sebastian Bach as well as Claude Debussy's Prélude à l'après-midi d'un faune.
"Music and art, culture in general, have always brought people together. Through this 'concert with a message', addressed to the entire world, we intend once again to stress that mankind must do everything possible that the horrific events of the Second World War seventy-five years ago are never repeated. And the music, beautiful and serene, that was written by and is still being written by great composers helps us better live our own lives," commented Valery Gergiev. Prior to the concert there will be words of welcome by representatives of the embassies of the USA, Germany, France, Great Britain and Russia (in Germany), together with which this project has been brought about. The broadcast will be available to view on mariinsky.tv, via the social networks VKontakte, Odnoklassniki and Facebook, on the Mariinsky Theatre's YouTube channel and also on the site of the Russian Seasons festival as part of the project Stay Home with Russian Seasons and on various European streaming platforms.
