The Mariinsky online: Leningrad symphony

On 12 May at 20.00 Moscow Time (GMT+3) the Mariinsky Theatre will be repeating an online screening of Dmitry Shostakovich's Seventh Symphony Leningrad. One of the most piercing works of the 20th century, here it is performed by the Mariinsky Orchestra under the baton of Valery Gergiev. The programme also features Sergei Prokofiev's Sixth Symphony, composed in the first years after the Second World War. This "symphonic elegy" in memory of victims of WW II, as it is known for its musical portrayal of their pain and sorrowful memories, was recorded by the Mariinsky Orchestra in 2016.

The broadcast is taking place in collaboration with the international cultural project Russian Seasons and the BOZAR Centre for Fine Arts, Belgium. It was today, 12 May, that the Mariinsky Orchestra and Valery Gergiev were due to appear in Brussels and perform the Leningrad symphony at the BOZAR. The online screening will be available to view for 24 hours on the platform mariinsky.tv and via the theatre's social networking pages on Vkontakte and Odnoklassniki, as well as on the official website and via the social networking pages of the Russian Seasons as part of the initiative Stay home with Russian Seasons, on the BOZAR centre's website as part of the project BOZAR at HOME and on the website of the Russian Centre for Science and Culture in Brussels.
