Marking one hundred and eighty years since the birth of Pyotr Tchaikovsky – Mariinsky Theatre performances on Okko

On the eve of the one hundred and eightieth anniversary of the birth of Pyotr Tchaikovsky the Mariinsky Theatre and Okko online cinema are offering audiences the opportunity to enjoy their favourite productions and rediscover classical masterpieces within the comfort of their own homes. The broadcasts are available via Okko's platform "Art Online", established with the support of Sberbank (Savings Bank of Russia), and the Mariinsky Theatre's platform mariinsky.tv.

Broadcasts commence at 19:00 Moscow Time (GMT+3). The video recording will be accessible for twenty-four hours. On 2 April there will be a screening of the opera Eugene Onegin after the eponymous novel in verse by Alexander Pushkin. In his production, Stage Director Alexei Stepanyuk carefully reflects Tchaikovsky's score and its literary source, picking out the important details of Russian "life on the estate" and etiquette as was perceived at those times. The work, intended to be performed by young singers, is intended first and foremost for audiences who are only just beginning to discover the world of opera. The broadcast will be of a performance recorded in 2015 in which Pushkin's characters were embodied by the best young Mariinsky Opera soloists including Andrei Bondarenko (Eugene Onegin), Yekaterina Goncharova (Tatiana), Yevgeny Akhmedov (Lensky), Yekaterina Sergeyeva (Olga) and Eduard Tsanga (Prince Gremin). Valery Gergiev was the conductor.

On Sunday 5 April there will be a broadcast of another masterpiece – the ballet-féerie The Sleeping Beauty, created by the genius of two great maestri – Pyotr Tchaikovsky and Marius Petipa. The production, the culmination of ballet art in the 19th century, in this ideal construction brought together everything that had been crafted on the St Petersburg stage by the choreographer. The dance harmony was defined by balanced proportions of pantomime, genre and colourful scenes together with classical dance forms calculated on the impeccable logic of the development of the plot, from the corps to the solo entrance of the ballerina. The lead roles in the ballet, recorded in 2015, were performed by Alina Somova (Princess Aurora), Vladimir Shklyarov (Prince Désiré), Kristina Shapran (the Lilac Fairy), Sofia Ivanova-Skoblikova (the Diamond Fairy), Igor Kolb (the wicked fairy Carabosse), Oxana Skorik (Princess Florine) and Alexei Timofeyev (the Bluebird). The conductor was Valery Gergiev.

Moreover, on 3 April mariinsky.tv and the theatre's social networks will be broadcasting a performance of the Mariinsky Orchestra under Valery Gergiev presenting Tchaikovsky's Third and Fourth Symphonies, recorded in September 2019 at the Zaryadye Concert Hall in Moscow. That broadcast will be the final evening of the All Tchaikovsky Symphonies series on mariinsky.tv.
